This is the dictionary definition of what a shadow is.
Some research images
The different types of lighting for shadow photography.
Flat lighting Flat lighting is when you have your light source facing directly towards your subject. This may will take shadows off your subject itself but will form shadows around your subject
Back lighting Back lighting is when your light source is behind your subject, therefore casting a shadow in front of your image subject. The lower the light is the more elongated the shadow your subject is casting will be and vice versa. the higher your light source, the shorter your light will be.
Split lighting Split lighting is when your light source is at 90 degrees to your subject. This will make one half of your subject light and the other half of your subject dark
Some of my own images
Initial response
To get these photos, we went for onto the courtyard of the school and around other parts of the school and decided to focus on capturing the shadows that were there at the time. The time we chose to go out was a good time because the sky was clear and the harsh winter sun was out, casting strong elongated shadow along the floor and walls.
Experiment
In photoshop, i am going to turn some photos black and white, and for some others i am going to boost the hue and saturation. For some images i may have even boosted the hue and saturation, and make it black and white. For some of the images i might slightly alter the colour balance.
How i made the black and white images
How i made the saturated images.
To make the images black and white, i put a black and white filter over the images and increased the lightness/darkness a small bit
i made the saturated images by boosting the saturation to a suitable level, and altering the colour balance ever so slightly.
Initial outcome
In these images, what i think went well was making the shadows stand out more in the images. They stand out more in the black and white one because the filter makes the wall lighter and the shadow darker and they stand out more in the saturated ones because the filter makes the blues sharper which make the subjects cast harsher shadows.
Shadow Photographer research
The reason have chosen these images is because i like that the shadows are different to the actual shape of the subject whether that be that the shadows are elongated and skewed such as the photos on the top and middle rows, or are something that include nature such as the ones on the bottom row.
Final Outcome:
In my images,i have clearly taken inspiration from the images i researched (shown above these images). I have placed a fork on a blank background and used a light source in a specific way to make the shadows stretched out. I also used another one of my research images and took a picture of a tree casting a shadow on a brick wall, which is what has been done in my images.
